With homecoming right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to do a school-spirit DIY project. I took a plain cardigan and added a red letter and stripes to the sleeves to make it look like a varsity sweater from the 1950s.

The varsity letters are easy to find at craft or fabric stores, but if you can’t seem to find what you want, you can always cut your letter out of felt. I chose the letter C because that’s my first initial, but you could choose your own or your school’s initial. You’ll also need an iron, white velvet ribbon, scissors and fusible tape.
1. Place your letter where you want it. You can tape or pin it down to keep it in place. Most varsity letters are iron-on, so no sewing involved!

2. Flip your sweater over so you can iron on your letter from the inside. (The back of the letter is the part that gets sticky when you heat it up. That’s why you flip your sweater over so that the letter is facing down and the sweater is lying on top of it.) I ironed the back of my letter (through the sweater) for about two minutes.

3. For the stripes on the sleeve, measure and cut two strips of the velvet ribbon. Since regular ribbon isn’t meant to be ironed on, follow the instructions on the fusible tape package to add the sticky layer to the back. Then iron on the ribbon the same way that you ironed on the letter.
